September Garden Checklist

What to do on the land in September — harvest, process, sow, and turn the beds toward fall.

September is the hinge month: the heat still holds, but the year is turning from growth to harvest. The beds that fed all summer are finishing, the pantry starts to fill, and the soil — soon — will be sown for spring. Work the list in order and the turning costs you nothing but an hour a day. The rhythm it follows is the old one: the Chinese solar terms, which have paced the turning year for more than two millennia.

The September checklist

  1. Harvest what is ready, daily. What ripens in the last heat spoils fast. Pick every day, eat the best, and set the rest aside for the pantry.
  2. Process the abundance: dry, ferment, store. Air-dry herbs on racks out of direct glare, hang the bundles, start the two-to-three-percent brines, and put the roots and squashes in the cool, dark, dry shelf. Every hour now is weeks of meals later — the full method is in the September blueprint.
  3. Sow the fall cover crops. The beds that are done get crimson clover or vetch now, for spring nitrogen. Contact, not depth: rake, broadcast, rake again, roll lightly. See the cover crops guide.
  4. Water with the season. As the heat breaks, refill the ollas less often — the pots meter what is needed. And check the rain barrel and the gutters before the fall rains arrive.
  5. Turn the beds and feed the soil. Pull the spent plants, leave the roots in place, add the compost. The ground is not done for the year; it is being set up for the next one.
  6. Read the calendar. The rhythm is the real calendar: growth is ending, harvest is here, rest is coming. September is the month to be present for the turn.

None of this has to happen at once. The list is in order and the month is long — one bed, one jar, one hour at a time. That is the whole method.
